What is OpenFundi? Your Complete Guide to Uganda's Skilled Workforce Platform

OpenFundi
OpenFundi Team
OpenFundi is a free, location-based platform connecting skilled Ugandan artisans with clients and employers. Learn how workers, clients, and job seekers use the platform to grow, hire, and find work.
Finding a reliable plumber in Uganda shouldn't feel like a gamble.
Neither should searching for steady work as an electrician in Jinja, or hiring a qualified tutor for your child in Guli. OpenFundi was built to solve these problems — one platform, three roles, one mission: connecting Uganda's skilled workforce with the people who need them.
What is OpenFundi?
OpenFundi is a free, location-based job platform designed specifically for Uganda. It connects skilled artisans — called fundi — with clients who need their services, and with job seekers looking for employment opportunities across the country.
Unlike generic job boards, OpenFundi is built around Uganda's unique labor market. It supports Ugandan phone numbers, prices in UGX, maps every district and neighborhood across four regions, and understands the way work actually happens here.
Whether you're a plumber looking for more clients, a parent searching for a qualified tutor, or a graduate hunting for your first job, OpenFundi gives you the tools to connect, work, and grow.
Three Roles, One Platform
OpenFundi supports three distinct user roles, each with tailored features:
For Clients — "I Need a Skilled Worker"
If you need work done — plumbing, electrical wiring, tailoring, tutoring, or any of the 16 supported trades — OpenFundi helps you find the right person fast.
What you can do:
- Browse verified artisan profiles with photos, bios, trade specializations, and completed job counts
- Search by name, trade, location, or keyword
- Filter by trade category and region (Central, Eastern, Northern, Western Uganda)
- View detailed profiles including hourly rates, "Fundi Since" dates, and verification status
- Contact artisans directly by phone or WhatsApp
- Post job listings for larger projects and review applications from multiple candidates
Every artisan on OpenFundi has a public profile page — like a digital business card — that you can share with friends and family. If you find a good plumber, share their link. That's how communities grow.
For Workers and Artisans — "I Offer My Skills"
OpenFundi gives skilled artisans something rare: a professional online presence. Your profile is your portfolio, your reputation, and your storefront — all in one place.
What you can do:
- Create a business profile showcasing your trade, bio, hourly rate, and location
- Upload a professional photo and get a custom URL (like `openfundi.ug/fundi/your-name`)
- Earn a Verified Fundi badge by completing your profile — verified artisans get priority visibility in search results
- Track your completed jobs and build a public reputation
- Share your profile on WhatsApp and social media
- Receive job applications directly when clients post work
OpenFundi currently supports 16 trades: Plumber, Electrician, Tutor, Tailor, Carpenter, Beautician, IT Technician, Mechanic, Driver, Chef, Barber, Cobbler, Mason, Painter, Welder, and Photographer. More trades will be added as the platform grows.
For Job Seekers — "I'm Looking for a Job"
If you're searching for full-time, part-time, remote, contract, or internship work, OpenFundi's job board connects you with employers across Uganda.
What you can do:
- Create a professional profile with your skills, experience, education, and certifications
- Browse job listings filtered by category, job type, experience level, and region
- Apply to jobs with a cover note, detailed work history, and education background
- Track your application status — from pending to reviewed, shortlisted, and hired
- Edit applications while they're still under review
Every application you submit includes a complete snapshot of your profile — your education history, work experience, certifications, languages, and technical skills — so employers see the full picture.

What Makes OpenFundi Different?
Built for Uganda, not adapted from elsewhere. Every feature — from phone number validation (+256 format) to currency (UGX) to geographic mapping (135 districts across 4 regions) — is designed around how work happens in Uganda.
Verification you can trust.
Workers earn a Verified badge by completing a profile checklist — uploading a photo, setting their trade, adding a phone number, and writing a bio. It's simple, transparent, and builds real trust.
A public profile for every artisan.
Every worker gets a shareable, SEO-optimized profile page. No more relying on word-of-mouth alone — your work speaks for itself, and your profile does the rest.
WhatsApp integration.
We know WhatsApp is how Uganda communicates. Workers can indicate their phone is on WhatsApp, making it easy for clients to reach out on the platform they already use.
Industry insights.
OpenFundi publishes articles on pricing, safety, business growth, and tools — written by verified tradespeople for tradespeople. It's not just a job board; it's a resource for professional growth.
Free to use.
OpenFundi doesn't charge subscriptions, commissions, or fees. The platform is supported by voluntary donations from the community. If it helped you, consider contributing to keep it running.
